Anthropic Replaces Git with Server-Side VCS Scion, Cutting Resource Usage by 200x
Anthropic has replaced Git with its proprietary version control system, Scion, to handle over 30,000 daily code merges. By shifting core operations like commits and merges to the server side, Scion reduces CPU and memory usage to 1/200th of Git's and cuts checkout times from minutes to seconds. This architecture is specifically optimized for always-on AI agents, eliminating the need for local full-repo storage.

On October 15, US-based AI company Anthropic announced it is deprecating Git in favor of its proprietary version control system, Scion. This shift moves most source code management operations to the server side, reducing the amount of data that agents and automated tasks need to download.
Anthropic stated that in May, the company averaged 2,500 code merges per day; by September, this figure had exceeded 30,000, surpassing Git's capabilities. Consequently, the company chose to develop its own Scion system.

Anthropic claims that Scion consumes only one two-hundredth of the CPU and memory required by Git. After switching systems, checkout operations for CI and research tasks now take just seconds instead of the previous several minutes.
According to IT Home, Scion executes commits, merges, rebases, and file history queries on the server side. The client is responsible for tracking local modifications, managing files, and maintaining a limited cache, allowing it to perform these operations independently without storing extensive repository data locally.
Anthropic noted that most of their clients are always-online agents, meaning Git's offline support offers no significant advantage. Centralizing operations on the server reduces local storage requirements and synchronization overhead. However, other companies may find it difficult to adopt this approach, as it requires accompanying custom tools for code review, search, and CI.
