Google Gemini 4 Agents Autonomously Beat Minecraft Ender Dragon
Google researchers deployed four Gemini 4 Argon agents to autonomously defeat the Ender Dragon in Minecraft within 27 hours, without any pre-set strategies or human intervention. The experiment demonstrated multi-agent collaboration, task decomposition, and long-horizon planning, consuming approximately 1.35 billion input tokens at a cost of around $1,620. This marks the first known instance of AI agents completing the game from scratch entirely autonomously.

On October 19, it was reported that Google researchers recently published a paper stating they successfully completed Minecraft using four Gemini 4 Argon agents, defeating the Ender Dragon in just 27 hours.

Google placed four Gemini 4 agents into randomly generated worlds, where they could coordinate with each other via the in-game chat box. However, the researchers did not provide any strategies; they only stated the final objective, leaving all actions to be planned autonomously by the agents. The researchers could observe the agents through a dashboard and issue pause or terminate commands for the test, but had no authority to intervene directly.
Once the game began, the agents quickly divided tasks: some built Enderman farms, others gathered food, and some focused on exploration. They shared combat techniques and retrieved lost equipment after teammates died.

Throughout the entire gameplay session, the four agents sent 229 messages, executed 2,783 programs, and died 605 times. It took them 13.5 hours to reach the End dimension, with the remaining time spent entirely on defeating the Ender Dragon. The process consumed 1.35 billion input tokens, costing approximately $1,620 based on standard user rates (IT Home note: equivalent to roughly 10,842 RMB at current exchange rates).
The research team stated: "To our knowledge, this is the first time AI agents have fully autonomously completed Minecraft from start to finish. The entire process used only the standard Mineflayer library, without seed maps or human assistance."
