OpenAI Launches 'Grid Protectors' to Cut Data Center Power During Grid Overload
OpenAI has launched the 'Grid Protectors' program, allowing utilities to remotely reduce data center power consumption during grid peaks. The first agreement with Georgia Power enables cutting up to 1,000MW from the Effingham County campus during demand surges, prioritizing residential supply. This initiative aims to mitigate growing community opposition to data centers while ensuring stable operation of large-scale compute infrastructure.

OpenAI says its future data centers will draw less power whenever local grids are overloaded, starting in Georgia.
The program, called Grid Protectors, arrives as local opposition to data centers grows.
Under the first deal, Georgia Power can cut up to 1,000MW from the OpenAI’s planned Effingham County campus during demand peaks like heat waves.
That power then stays available for homes, enough by the company’s estimate for the average demand of about 700,000 households.
Even at full cutback, the data center would still draw about 2,200MW, since the cut covers only 1,000MW of its roughly 3,200MW need.
OpenAI argues that a big, steady customer helps everyone else, because it spreads the fixed cost of power lines across more sales.
