Racing to Beat Anthropic's IPO: Reports Suggest OpenAI Is Accelerating New Funding Round, Valuation May Exceed $1.4 Trillion
On October 20, Reuters reported that two sources familiar with the matter stated that OpenAI is scrambling to secure investor commitments, aiming to close its funding round before competitor Anthropic’s anticipated mid-November IPO. The pace of this fundraising is unusually rapid; if completed successfully, the ChatGPT developer’s valuation could surpass $1.4 trillion (Note: approximately 9.37 trillion RMB at current exchange rates).
Sources indicated that this tight timeline partly reflects OpenAI’s intent to act ahead of Anthropic, as the two industry-leading labs increasingly compete for the same pool of investors.
Additionally, OpenAI seeks to consolidate its position by leveraging recent revenue growth following the launch of new models. One source revealed that SoftBank Group, Abu Dhabi-based MGX, and other existing backers are currently in discussions regarding participation in this roughly $30 billion (approximately 200.782 billion RMB) funding round.
Last week, coinciding with Anthropic’s investor day, OpenAI also met with several long-term investment funds and sovereign wealth funds. Sources noted that the progress of OpenAI’s current funding round is expected to significantly outpace the typical timeline for rounds of similar scale.
Investors familiar with OpenAI pointed out that the company requires substantial capital to support its massive infrastructure investments. Furthermore, these funds would serve to strengthen its balance sheet should deteriorating IPO market conditions force a delay in its planned 2027 listing.
Despite strong market demand for shares in both companies, investors face challenges: they must evaluate two competing, complex businesses and make capital allocation decisions within just days or weeks.
Sources stated that some investors believe OpenAI’s aggressive fundraising efforts aim to lock in capital that might otherwise have been allocated to Anthropic’s IPO.
