Marvell Plans Acquisition of Lumentum to Boost AI Interconnects
Bloomberg reports that semiconductor firm Marvell is negotiating to acquire optical communications leader Lumentum, with a deal potentially announced next week. The move aims to integrate chip design with high-speed optical interconnect technologies to meet surging demand for AI data center infrastructure. If completed, it would mark a significant consolidation in the AI hardware supply chain.

IT Home reported on October 29 that Bloomberg published an article today (October 29) stating that US semiconductor company Marvell Technology is planning to acquire Lumentum, a manufacturer of optical communication equipment for data centers. The two parties are currently in negotiations, and the deal could be announced as early as next week.
Citing the Bloomberg report, IT Home noted that no final agreement has been reached yet. If the transaction goes through, it could become a heavyweight merger in the AI hardware supply chain sector.
In terms of scale, Lumentum’s current market capitalization is approximately $83 billion (equivalent to about RMB 554.526 billion at the current exchange rate), while Marvell’s market cap stands at around $221 billion (approximately RMB 1.48 trillion). Bloomberg stated that this potential deal highlights how the AI race is driving tech companies to accelerate expansion through acquisitions, aiming to secure resources in optical communications and data center interconnects.
Lumentum primarily manufactures lasers and optical components used for high-speed transmission of massive amounts of data between data centers, telecom networks, and servers. As AI clusters rapidly expand in size, high-speed optical interconnects have become critical infrastructure determining computing efficiency.
The report indicated that if the deal proceeds smoothly, Marvell will more closely integrate its chip design capabilities with Lumentum’s optical modules, lasers, and optical interconnect technologies. This integration would help strengthen Marvell’s product portfolio for AI data centers and streamline parts of its supply chain.
Market reaction to the news was intense. Lumentum’s US stock surged by approximately 17% in after-hours trading before gains narrowed; meanwhile, Marvell Technology shares fell by about 8% in after-hours trading. Bloomberg suggested that investors recognize the long-term strategic value of AI optical interconnects but also worry about the financing pressures, equity dilution, and integration risks associated with such a large acquisition.
