From Proprietary "Manuals" to Community Governance: Anthropic Donates Agent Skills Open Standard
On October 23, it was reported that Anthropic issued an announcement yesterday (October 22), declaring the donation of its Agent Skills open standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a Linux Foundation project. This move transitions the standard from a single-company initiative to a community-governed capability standard for AI agents.
Established on December 9, 2025, and operated by the Linux Foundation, AAIF was co-founded by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI. The foundation is responsible for hosting and governing open protocols, standards, and open-source projects within the AI agent ecosystem. Previously, Anthropic had already donated the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to this organization.
Note: Agent Skills can be understood as "manuals" for AI agents: folders containing SKILL.md documentation files that teach agents specific tasks or domain knowledge, potentially accompanied by scripts, templates, and reference materials. AI agents can load these skills on demand, enabling the reuse of workflows and specialized expertise across different products.

Since its release as an open standard in December 2025, more than 70 agent platforms—including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code—have integrated Agent Skills. Anthropic stated that the number of public skills has reached approximately 1 million, with cumulative installations totaling around 280 million.
In addition to the specification itself, this donation includes the Agent Skills name, logo, GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain. Anthropic emphasized that the standard will remain open, community-led, and vendor-neutral in the future; developers and enterprises can continue to use or contribute to the standard even without joining AAIF.
