Google Launches ACE: Hardware-Isolated MicroVMs for AI Agents with Sub-500ms Resume
Google has introduced ACE, a service providing hardware-isolated microVMs specifically optimized for AI agents. It enables secure code execution and browser control while supporting rapid suspend/resume cycles under 500 milliseconds to optimize resource usage and security.

According to the official announcement, the ACE service provides each AI agent with an isolated hardware microVM (micro virtual machine), enabling it to safely execute code, invoke tools, control browsers, and complete multi-step tasks.
As reported by IT Home citing blog posts, unlike traditional virtual machines or containers, ACE is specifically optimized for the lifecycle characteristics of agents. It features rapid startup, independent guest kernels and root privileges, and security guaranteed through hardware-isolated Cloud Hypervisor boundaries. Google states that credentials are not stored within the sandbox to mitigate risks associated with agent misuse or data leakage.
A key highlight of the ACE service is its "persistent and pausable" nature. When an agent is idle, its computing environment can be automatically suspended to release resources; when work needs to resume, file and memory states can be quickly restored.
Google claims that in tests involving 200,000 agents, pause and resume operations took less than 500 milliseconds, and shared memory and snapshot replication significantly increase the number of agents a single server can support.
The service was initially used to support Gemini, the Gemini platform, Antigravity, as well as Google's internal model evaluation and reinforcement learning workflows. In the future, developers will be able to use ACE via Google Cloud to independently manage their agent environments' images, identities, network access, and lifecycles, while Google handles underlying resource scheduling and scaling.
