Ethereum core researcher Justin Drake and co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently issued a joint warning that rapid AI progress in algebra and theoretical computer science could shrink the window for breaking Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) from years to months. This potential threat undermines the security foundation of current crypto wallets. Although no evidence suggests existing signature schemes have been compromised, academic concerns over AI-assisted mathematical breakthroughs have drawn significant community attention.
To mitigate this risk, Drake proposed a "bunker mode" defense strategy, urging users to move assets to new addresses that have never signed transactions, thereby keeping public keys completely unexposed. The logic is that exposing only a public key hash prevents private key derivation, avoiding attacks based on public key analysis. While Buterin agrees on the long-term need for architectures relying solely on hash functions, he emphasizes that operational errors during hasty migrations often cause greater losses than hacker attacks, advocating for orderly management rather than panic-driven transfers.
This event marks a new challenge for cryptographic security paradigms in the AI era. It compels developers to reassess the quantum and AI resistance of blockchain underlying signature mechanisms and drives industry exploration of more robust key management solutions. Balancing enhanced security with user experience will be a critical issue for Ethereum and the broader Web3 ecosystem.
