OpenAI's Release of 722 AI-Generated Math Papers Sparks Academic Anxiety Over Originality and Research Timelines
OpenAI's sudden publication of 722 AI-generated mathematics papers has triggered significant unease among professional mathematicians regarding machine precedence and the definition of originality. NYU Professor Tristan Buckmaster noted that while he utilizes tools like Anthropic and OpenAI, he deliberately excludes core ideas from them to preserve human-led novelty. This incident highlights the structural tension between the infinite supply of open mathematical problems and the finite duration of academic careers.

Professional Mathematicians are unsettled because AI can now publish novel work before they do.
NYU math professor Tristan Buckmaster on CNBC says "I still use Anthropic/OpenAI/Codex, but I don't put any sort of ideas in there. Anything I decide to be original."
He was talkinga about that OpenAI's famous drop of 722 AI-generated math papers.
May be becasue, the supply of open problems is infinite, but a PhD clock and a 2-year postdoc are not.
